  • Ensure that your STM32 boot configuration is set correctly. If the device is set to boot from the wrong memory (e.g., system memory instead of Flash), the debugger might not connect. This is configurable through boot pins or device options.

 

Code Protection and Debug Locks

 

  • Make sure that the Flash Read-Out Protection (RDP) level is set to 0, which is typically "No protection". Higher protection levels can disable debugging capabilities. Use the STM32CubeProgrammer to adjust these settings if needed.
  • If the device flash has any protection or debugging locks enabled, remove them to allow communication.

 

Analyze and Resolve Software Issues

 

  • Faulty code can interrupt the debugging process. Flash and run a simple known working example to confirm if your setup works independently of the specific project code.
  • Check the code for infinite loops, accidental resets, or code that disables debugging prematurely.

Advanced Troubleshooting Techniques

 

  • Use a logic analyzer to inspect the signals between the ST-LINK and the STM32 device. This can help you determine if data is being correctly transferred and where in the process a failure occurs.
  • If you have access to multiple ST-LINK devices, try to cross-reference by swapping units to rule out device-specific issues.
